Company History In 1962 ‘The Cheese Shop' opened its doors in Villanova Pennsylvania. At the time, it was a franchise of the same name. Introducing the concept of gourmet cheeses and foods to the wealthy western suburbs of Philadelphia, was a mixed bag of successes and setbacks. On one hand, people who traveled the world were willing to try exotic cheeses. On the other hand, most people didn't know the difference between Brie and Cheddar.
By 1968 when Betts Sellers McCoy took over the shop and changed the name to Villanova Cheese Shop, Inc., it became clear that the task at hand was to educate the public. Betts was a dynamo with endless energy and the depth of personality to handle the job. She studied the cheeses of the world and began the task of educating the people of the main line (western suburbs of Philly). She became well known in food circles and many credit her with bringing a taste of Europe to the tables of many of Philadelphia's restaurants and homes.
By 1980 Betts was ready to retire. Her Daughter, Susan McCoy was already trained and ready to take over where her mother left off. It took a year before Sue learned the business end. She proved to be just as savvy as her mother is. The business continued to grow. In 1982 Sue took on a partner, John Fissinger, but first she married him. (22 years later, they have 3 children, young men, who are also learning about cheese and, working in the warehouse).
In the late 80's, John wanted to expand so they opened two new stores; one in Paoli, and one in Malvern. Eventually the building that the original store was in was torn down. They consolidated remaining operations into the Malvern store in 1995. In 1996 they rented warehouse space in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. Now all manufacturing is done in Pottstown, Pa. Over the years, Sue and John had become knowledgeable about foods, cheeses, and making cheese spreads. They have a combined 55 years of experience.
In late 1996 they were looking for an outlet for that experience and decided to market their line of cheese spreads. It was an obvious outgrowth and they started right in. John worked to develop new flavors and make contacts in the distribution end and Sue helped with her considerable expertise.
In 1997 with 12 different flavors, which had been tested in their shop, John started to market them to retailers. He met with almost immediate success but needed better packaging and more turnovers.
In 1998, Genuardis Family Markets took on 8 flavors. First they had to be tested in several of their new stores. The Cheese Spreads flew off the shelves, and the beginning of a successful business relationship began. John hired Joe Slavinski as his warehouse coordinator and shipping dock manager.
In 1999 John decided that a lot of pioneering needed to be done to get our ideas along with our spreads out to the more buyers. We have established relationships with many major food chains by using the ideas, which were developed over the years of experience with recipes and combinations of foods with cheese spreads.
We expanded into the Baltimore/Washington market in October of 2000 and have had great success. Many fine gourmet food stores and markets from Massachusetts to North Carolina now carry our products. In 2003 our business grew at a rapid pace. We grew into the Chicago market. We have invested in new machinery and have increased our productivity by a large margin. We can now meet the needs of all of our customers and still remain true to our philosophy, which we developed as pioneers in the specialty foods business. All of our spreads and products are made of the finest ingredients we can find.
